The Old Texas of My Dreams: Tradição e Modernidade no Cinema Crítico de Carlos Alberto Prates Correia - A Singularidade de Minas Texas

Abstract

The cinema, artistic expression of the most important and popular, offers us the most varied and rich ways of interpreting and understanding the reality. From the analysis of the film Minas Texas - The Old Texas of My Dreams (1989), directed by filmmaker Carlos Alberto Prates Correia that born in Montes Claros, we sought a better understanding of the processes which encompass and embrace tradition and modernity within the experience cultural of the north of Minas Gerais and Brazil. We seek, in this work, breaking the apparent dichotomy between the concepts of traditional and modern to finally understand more clearly the paradoxical interdependence of both. Analyzing the development of the cultural industry in Brazil from the 1960s to the present day, we have seen how the notion of modernity in the consumer society was emptied through the ages, the traditional pulse burst have been lost and, increasingly comes being shaped an uncritical modernity, much more willing to maintain the current order than face the future as a new possibility.
