Fé, identidade e cultura na festa de Santa Rosa de Lima, distrito de Montes Claros - MG

Abstract

The different forms of cultural manifestations that currently take place in rural communities, suggests the comprehension of the diverse appropriation and reinventions of those places, as well as the importance and the different meanings that religious feasts have to a certain society. The religious festivities have always been contributing to the creation of the culture and local identity, and are responsible for the dynamical of the society that is directly related to these celebrations. Catholicism, when it entered the North American territory, provided a new interpretation to the religious practices. Providing different ways of faith exulting due to the transformations to hold in it African and Indians cultural rituals, adapting this religion to those population’s beliefs. The place category on this study is apprehended through the comprehension of the affective links between inhabitants and the sense of belonging related to the district of Santa Rosa de Lima, located in Montes Claros –MG. The history of the religious feast dedicated to Bom Jesus, Santo Antônio e its patron saint which the community is named after, as well as the importance of these festivities to its inhabitants e to those who return in this period, were the main focus of interpretation to develop this study. Through memory it was possible to understand either the changes or the traditions that remain. Thus, it is proposed to embark the popular religious feast’s dynamics of Santa Rosa de Lima and its importance in the formation of the place, population’s identity and culture, as well as its transformations e persistence of the festival elements among diverse contemporary phenomena. Therefore, theoretical reference is based on the concepts of culture, identity, place, popular Catholicism, feasts, and others. Readings based on Cultural and Humanistic Geography and geoanthropologic subsidies were fundamental for the writing. On the same sense the rescue of memory was essential to look into and understand the perceptions e manifestations of the subjects involved in this religious manifestation. The study provided understand the changes and persistence of some party features and how it has its importance in the experience of sociability and maintaining the faith of the participants.
